Dark Ale with others to come
Saturday 01/09/12 was the first day of Spring. It was also the final day of a 20% off sale at Grain & Grape. I headed over there and stocked up on kits with some grain additions for a Cream Ale, a Dark Ale (Steve already had the dark kit) and a Wit Beer. We took care of the Dark Ale that very day and will most likely knock off the other two next Saturday.
The brew went pretty well. We steeped about 0.5 kg of Munich Malt before adding the extract but it turns out we steeped it in too much water. We added a mix of Cascade and Tettnang for aroma purposes but they were probably in too long. Those were the two main problems but everything else seemed to go well. We used Fermentis Safale US-05 and about 24 hours later the fermentation started cranking. Like or not, for something to do, we added about 150ml of maple syrup at the end of the boil. I don’t know whether or not it’ll come through after the fermentation but something tells me it won’t. But giving new things a try is a good thing, IMHO.
